We understand that life has ups and downs, we’re here to support you during both. If you’re concerned your mental health is impacting the way you manage your money, we have a range of services available to support you.

Some signs you may be struggling:

  • you may feel anxious about reading bank statements or logging on to digital banking. At times you may try to avoid it altogether
  • you may be overspending or splurging which can often leave people with feelings of guilt after
  • you could be left overdrawn for long periods of time, which means that you are living off credit
  • your sleep could be disturbed as you are thinking about your financial circumstances
  • you could be feeling low, anxious or like there is no way out due financial circumstances

How we can help

We’re here to support you and can get things in place to help you manage your finances. You can speak to us in branch, online or over the phone.

Visit a branch

We can arrange longer appointments and offer private rooms if you’d like to speak to someone face to face. You’re welcome to ask a family member or friend to come with you when you visit the branch.

If you apply for a new product with us, you can take your paperwork home to read over before you commit to signing. There’s no pressure to do it on the spot.

Online banking and Live Chat

As well as being able to manage your account online, we have a Live Chat service so you can speak to someone without having to call. To start a chat with one of our agents, select the ‘Live Chat’ tab on the left hand side of this page.

If the ‘Live Chat’ option is not there, this means we have no available agents. If this is the case, please try one of the alternative contact options below.

You can also log on to online banking and send us a secure message at any time if you have any questions.

Call us

When you’re ready to speak to us, you can call us on 03457 404 404 or Textphone 03457 125 583. We can help with a range of enquiries on this line. Calls charges are the same as local rate calls. However, you may want to check with your service provider whether these charges are covered under your existing call plan.

If you don’t feel like phoning us and have our app, then you can manage your account securely from your smartphone. You’re able to:

  • check your balance
  • make payments to existing and new payees
  • transfer money between your HSBC personal accounts

Managing debt

If you’re struggling with debt and have missed a payment or are worried about missing a payment, you can call our team of specialists on 0345 850 0622 or Textphone 03457 125 583 to get a helping hand. Lines are open:

  • 8am to 9pm, Monday to Thursday
  • 8am to 6pm, Friday
  • 8.30am to 4pm, Saturday

Getting help from someone else

If you feel it’s too much to manage your account, you can empower someone to act on your behalf. You need to either obtain a Power of Attorney first or we can arrange to set up a Third Party mandate for you.

We also have the option for you to set up an Emergency Contact, which tells us that you would like us to speak with someone you trust if you’re unwell and unable to communicate. If you would like to learn more about Power of Attorney the Citizens Advice is a good place to start.

Budgeting

To get on top of your finances, have a go at putting a budget together. This can help you assess your incomings, outgoings and disposable income.

Prioritise your mental health and wellbeing

If you’re experiencing challenges with your mental health and wellbeing, then we encourage you to visit your GP who can help you further.

If you want to learn more about mental health, the NHS website is a good place to start.

There are also some things that you can do right now. They may not make the problem go away, but they may help you in the moment:

  • rehydrate – even mild dehydration can cause disturbances in mood
  • get enough sleep – sleep can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and can improve your mood 
  • exercise for 30 minutes a day, regularly
  • change your surroundings – go to a café, the supermarket, somewhere different from where you are now
  • breathing exercises – there are many apps available which can help, such as Calm or Headspace
  • reach out to someone – talking is considered one of the best forms of therapy and getting things off your chest can help
  • get in touch with a charity that can help you. You can see the charities that can support below
